But this was also a world where sacrifices had to be made for the sake of the greater good, and ultimately, goodness and love triumph over hate and evil. I was reminded of a dark and scary time in recent history where it seemed there was no freedom, no hope and no good in the world anymore. This time, Lara introduced me to the world of Nafisah and Eddy, a world of military oppression, coups and violence. Having read two of her previous books and many of her series and short stories, I knew what to expect: a heartfelt and moving story with characters I could empathise with. “I recently read Lara Daniel’s soon-to-be-published novella, “The Officer’s Bride”. Based on dozens of hours of interviews with Alvarenga and his colleagues, search and rescue officials, the medical team that saved his life and the remote islanders who nursed him back to normality, this is an epic tale of survival and one man's incredible story of beating the ultimate odds. Crawling ashore, he was saved by a local couple living in their own private castaway paradise. But Alvarenga developed a method of survival that kept his body and mind intact long enough for the Pacific Ocean to spit him up onto a remote palm-studded island. Alvarenga survived 438 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean, drifting 7000 miles from just off Mexico, to the Marshall Islands. He considered suicide on multiple occasions - including offering himself up to a pack of circling sharks. On January 30, 2014, he abandoned his boat and swam to shore, where he stumbled upon a beach house owned by a local couple. Not one stopped for the stranded fisherman. Three dozen cruise ships and container vessels passed nearby. When she was a child, Keller received a letter from a writer that she quoted in her autobiography: "Some day you will write a great story out of your own head, that will be a comfort and help to many." This statement proved prophetic, as her autobiography The Story of My Life, published in the United States in 1903, is still read today for its ability to motivate and reassure readers. Keller has become, in American culture, an icon of perseverance, respected and honored by readers, historians, and activists. ![]() Helen Keller overcame the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of deafness and blindness to become an influential lecturer and social activist. ![]() How to write about africa wainaina5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Don’t get bogged down with precise descriptions. I kept waiting for more revelations of otherworldly-ness, but they never came. This last one got to me the most because I read urban fantasy for otherworldly anatomy and physiology, which this series does not deliver. Furthermore, there’s thin world building, minimal mythology, and unimpressive monster pathology. Heavy plotting, lots of action, lots of sex and innuendos (not witty unfortunately), lots of cardboard side characters, lots of blood, fetishistic descriptions of blood, and high body count. So it’s a big deal when a book makes me quit the whole series due to character problems. That doesn’t usually happen because I don’t follow a series just for the likability of the MC. Whether or not I “like” or “root for” certain characters is usually an afterthought. To top it off, it’s the main character that made me rage quit reading. The first book impressed me the two after it, not at all. ![]() Libba bray the diviners series5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() At the same time, a ouija board has awakened a spirit by the name of Naughty John.
